Youth & Teen Classes include youth classes and dance classes, along with adult classes held in the same program. The program also includes Queering Dance Festival rehearsals and workshops, as well as the annual Winter Dance workshop. These classes and activities take place at Shawl-Anderson Dance Center (SADC) and at BANDALOOP, which is a wheelchair accessible space.
• Schedule: Class and workshop options are available Monday–Thursday from 9:00 a.m.–9:00 p.m. and Friday–Sunday from 9:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m., with a spring session from January 5–June 1, 2025 (no classes January 19 or April 5) and a summer session from June 8–August 14, 2025 (no classes the week of July 4 and the week of July 28).
Shawl-Anderson Dance Center was founded in 1958 and has been serving the community since then, with a legacy spanning over sixty years. The organization is a non-profit, community-based organization with 501c3 status. Its mission states that it provides dance education, institutional support for artists, a performance and rehearsal venue, and partnerships with other community-based organizations. The studio supports local artists, serves as a rehearsal and performance space, and partners with various community organizations, including through expanded programming at BANDALOOP Studios in Oakland. The organization seeks guidance and learns from colleagues, including past work with Tammy Johnson, Sarah Crowell, Nyama McCarthy-Brown, and Dancing Around Race. It describes itself as a home for dance and a multigenerational dance space welcoming movers of all ages and backgrounds, with racial equity at the core of its commitment to diversity, inclusion, and anti-racism.
