STEM Programs (Super Science Saturdays & Maker Camp)

About
STEM Programs (Super Science Saturdays & Maker Camp) includes hands-on activities such as exploring game design, animation, and engineering. Participants visit science museums, take part in workshops with local STEM professionals, and work on real-world projects. The programs also include mentorship and career-connected learning.
• Ages: 6–15 years old
• Schedule: Super Science Saturdays is a six-weekend STEM program offered in both the spring and fall; Maker Camp is a 4-week summer program, and programs are offered in the summer, on weekends, and during mid-year school breaks.
• Price: The Berkeley Public Schools Fund partners with Berkeley Unified School District (BUSD) to provide free, hands-on K–12 STEM programs.
The Berkeley Public Schools Fund, established in 1983 as the Berkeley Public Education Foundation, runs these STEM Programs as part of its mission “to champion equitable public education for students, families, and our community.” The programs are designed to expand access to high-quality STEM learning, particularly for students who are currently underrepresented in the field, with a focus on equity and access. Maker Camp includes a bridge to Berkeley High School’s Career Technical Education (CTE) program, and the programs are immersive and project-based, extending STEM learning beyond the classroom.
The STEM Programs are part of a broader team that includes Nagat Alwasim (STEM Programs Manager) and Angie Won (Director of Finance & Operations, STEM Programs Supervisor), along with other staff and board members. Executive Director Duffy Ross holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Romance Languages from Dartmouth College, a Master’s Degree in Nonprofit Management from the University of San Francisco, and is enrolled in a Doctoral program in Education Leadership at Northeastern University.
The Berkeley Public Schools Fund partners with Berkeley Unified School District to provide these free, hands-on K–12 STEM programs and is entirely supported by contributions from individuals and businesses in the community. A Maker Camp teacher notes that having free access to these programs is “monumental to growing diversity within STEM fields” and highlights the importance of engaging students of color, girls, and gender-expansive youth in STEM during their youth. Staff from Super Science Saturdays report that students enjoyed science and math awareness in a fun way and learned that making mistakes is an opportunity to learn, and that students learned how to better work together, explore their unique ideas, and put them into action. A Super Science Saturdays parent shares that their son loves science and dinosaurs, dreams of becoming a paleontologist, and is getting the chance to widen his horizons and meet others who share his interests.
