About
Waterside Workshops engages youth and the community through hands-on learning in bicycle mechanics, wooden boatbuilding, and outdoor education. The program includes bicycle education, repair, and reuse, traditional wooden boatbuilding, outdoor adventures, and community bike repair workshops. It also offers vocational training in bicycle mechanics and traditional wooden boatbuilding, job-training internship programs, and boat rentals.
• Ages: 8–18 years old
• Schedule: Street Level Cycles retail and service shop at 84 Bolivar Drive will be closed through April 8, 2026 and will reopen on Thursday, April 9, with regular hours Thursday–Saturday from 12–6pm; Street Level Cycles bike sales and repairs run Wednesday–Sunday 12–6pm; Community Open Shop runs Saturday and Sunday 12–6pm; Berkeley Boathouse boat rentals run Wednesday–Sunday 12–5pm
Waterside Workshops was established in 2007. Each year, over 300 youth ages 8–24 participate in internships, classes, and outdoor adventures. The program was established to address the disappearance of woodshop, metalshop, and other vocational programs from surrounding schools. It offers internships and jobs for youth in two social enterprises: a community bike shop and a wooden boat shop and boat rental facility. Street Level Cycles is a bicycle education, repair, and reuse program, and Berkeley Boathouse is a traditional wooden boatbuilding program. Waterside Adventures focuses on increasing youth access to nature. Waterside Workshops provides flexible, hands-on training in a safe and supportive environment, serving over 300 youth each year, and offers a non-traditional educational space for youth to learn and practice core job skills under the supervision of experienced and caring professionals.
Working in collaboration with schools and partner organizations in the community, Waterside’s job-training and outdoor programs help youth grow into skilled, confident, and autonomous leaders of the Bay Area community. There are many ways to contribute to the Waterside mission, including making a donation, purchasing a bike, renting a boat, or attending events. Waterside provides free services to youth and the community.
