About
Burbank Dance Academy offers training in classical ballet, contemporary, jazz, acrobatics, tap, hip-hop, and a competitive Performance Company. The program also includes a Pre-Ballet division for younger dancers.
• Ages: 3–18 years old
Burbank Dance Academy’s mission is to provide, from age 3, a dynamic, all-encompassing curriculum that focuses on the development of the whole dancer in a positive, supportive, and nurturing environment. The curriculum is Vaganova-based classical ballet training supplemented by non-classical classes, with classical ballet at its core to establish a solid foundation. The program includes a division for dancers who want outstanding training while also doing other extracurricular activities, and lessons are structured so they are transferable and applicable across genres.
The Pre-Ballet program serves as a preparatory division that introduces children to the beauty and joy of dance. Pre-Ballet classes are designed for the youngest dancers starting at age 3, or once potty-trained. Pre-Ballet focuses on musicality, rhythm, flexibility, strength, and stamina, while emphasizing fundamental technical progression.
Étoile is an accelerated, pre-professional program for dancers beginning at age 8 who demonstrate an aptitude for classical ballet. The Étoile curriculum is based on the principles and fundamentals of classical ballet with Vaganova technique at its core, and it is designed to allow any dancer to start learning classical ballet for the modern-day market. Étoile aims to prepare dancers to be employable, healthy, and to have longevity as professionals, and admission to the Étoile program is by audition only. Étoile students have been admitted to Summer Intensive Programs including the American Ballet Theatre, San Francisco Ballet, Boston Ballet, Houston Ballet, Ellison Ballet, and the John Cranko School.
The faculty at Burbank Dance Academy have a combined 100+ years of experience as dance educators and performers and are described as highly accomplished, with some of the best dance educators in the city. Faculty meet regularly to maintain the integrity of what is being taught in all classes, assess student progress, and address concerns. The program places emphasis on clear, to-the-point, honest communication with both parents and students. The academy is led by Director Jason Coosner.
In 2024, Burbank Dance Academy was recognized as being in the top 5% of ballet schools in the U.S., according to the study “Quantifying Hierarchy and Prestige in U.S. Ballet Academies as Social Predictors of Career Success,” conducted by researchers from Northwestern University, Northeastern University, Harvard University, and the University of Virginia.
