About
Victory Theatre Center Acting Studio offers acting classes, directing seminars, and technical seminars, along with productions, workshops, staged readings, and special events. The program also includes BACK STORY, a bi-monthly evening of true stories, poetry, and “flights of fancy,” and instruction in Meisner basics technique. Classes are small and allow only the most dedicated actors, and this exclusivity gives all the actors an opportunity to work in every class.
• Schedule: BACK STORY meets bi-monthly; additional schedule details vary by activity
Victory Theatre Center Acting Studio is part of an award-winning nonprofit theatre that has been dedicated to developing and producing new theatrical works for more than four decades. Since 1980, the Victory Theatre has presented over 100 productions and 100 workshops, 80% of which have been new plays, and it is celebrating 46 years of The Victory Theater. The program was founded by Artistic Director Maria Gobetti and the late Tom Ormeny, and Maria Gobetti works closely with her students, teaching the Meisner basics technique on an individual basis while also using available video facilities.
The studio presents its productions, workshops, staged readings, and special events in two intimate performance spaces called the Big Victory Theatre and the Little Victory Theatre, described as a small theatre where the small space cultivates closeness and a shared experience that creates connection and community. It is recognized as Burbank’s home for new plays and bold storytelling and as a creative home for playwrights, actors, and directors committed to original storytelling and artistic exploration. Victory Theatre Center is described as “one of the bravest and most prolific producing theatres in Los Angeles.”
The program’s mission is to create a collaborative space where playwrights, directors, actors, and designers can explore bold ideas and bring original stories to life, to develop new plays, produce world premieres and significant revivals by American playwrights, and to foster the emergence of new talent. All of the theatrical arts are fostered through productions, dramaturgical workshops, acting classes, and directing and technical seminars, and the organization engages in creative partnerships and productions that dramatize current social, political, and economic issues. Events are designed to engage artists and to educate, challenge, and entertain audiences, and the theatre has supported hundreds of artists and audiences through its productions, workshops, and community programming that champions the development of new voices in American theatre.
Victory Theatre Center Acting Studio is recognized as an inclusive multi-disciplinary venue that champions and challenges artists to move audiences with new works from new voices through dramaturgy and theatrical world premieres. Anti-racism is stated as a core value and a central aspect of its standards of excellence, and the theatre has a zero-tolerance policy for accepting donation dollars from individuals or companies that knowingly uphold racism or racist practices. The organization commits to increasing recruiting and representation of People of the Global Majority and under-represented designers and artists, seeking out works that represent the racial and cultural diversity of the community, prioritizing the use of dramaturgs or cultural consultants for culturally specific shows, and choosing a representative from each production as a deputy to help ensure that its Anti-Racism, Equity and Inclusion Policy is upheld and maintained.
The theatre is located in the heart of the Burbank theatre community and offers community programming that champions the development of new voices in American theatre. It acknowledges that it is living and working on the unceded territory of the Tongva and the Kizh people, encourages people to learn what land they live and work on and about the Indigenous people of the Los Angeles area, and commits to increasing representation of People of the Global Majority and historically under-represented persons on its Board and diversifying its donor base. The organization also states that it will examine its approach to audiences so that, over time, they more accurately reflect the city of Los Angeles, and it commits to being open to discussion about this policy and to being held accountable by its community and colleagues.
