McPherson Elementary COOL School offers a before-school program Monday through Friday from 6:35–8:05 am. Bellevue Elementary COOL School runs Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 2:45–6:00 pm, and Wednesday from 12:40–6:00 pm. J.X. Wilson Elementary COOL School runs Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 2:45–6:00 pm, and Wednesday from 12:30–6:00 pm. Kawana Springs and Meadow View Elementary COOL Schools run Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 2:35–6:00 pm, and Wednesday from 12:05–6:00 pm. At Robert L. Stevens Elementary COOL School, hours for TK/K are to be determined; for 1st–3rd graders the program runs Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 2:18–6:00 pm and Wednesday from 12:05–6:00 pm, and for 4th–6th graders it runs Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 2:45–6:00 pm and Wednesday from 12:30–6:00 pm.
The Napa County Office of Education Community Programs department administers these Expanded Learning programs as part of its AmeriCorps initiatives. The department’s mission is to provide AmeriCorps members an opportunity to support children, families, and the broader community. The Expanded Learning programs are part of a broader history that includes the COOL School afterschool program beginning in 1999 and earlier AmeriCorps efforts such as Project SCHOLARS in 1998. The department hosts AmeriCorps Expanded Learning (EXL) and AmeriCorps Volunteer Infrastructure Project (VIP), and also administers AmeriCorps Neighbor to Neighbor (N2N) and the Volunteer Infrastructure Training Academy (VITA). Founder Julie McClure received a Congressional honor in 2018, presented to Congress by U.S. Representative Mike Thompson. The leadership team includes Director Barbara Thorsen and several coordinators and planners, along with site supervisors at individual schools such as Miriam Lopez at Bellevue Elementary, David Dennett at J.X. Wilson Elementary, Jose Ruiz at Kawana Springs Elementary, Giovany Morales at Meadow View Elementary, Laura Cervantes at Robert L. Stevens Elementary, and Silvia Reyes at Taylor Mountain Elementary.
