Founded in 1961, San Jose Community Youth Service (CYS) is rooted in Japanese American values and focuses on activities that involve teamwork, sportsmanship, and community involvement. The organization is an active part of the Japanese American community in San Jose and is committed to serving as a resource and rallying point for the Nikkei community. Membership is open to anyone who has demonstrated a commitment to serving, maintaining, and nurturing the Nikkei community.

CYS is a parent-run organization that operates through the work and dedication of parents. Parental participation is a tradition in every part of the organization, including coaching teams, serving on the CYS board, or running community giving committees. Parents and kids are required to volunteer in annual activities as part of their membership duties, and CYS encourages parents and children to participate in community activities outside of the organization. CYS members are welcome to attend the monthly online CYS Board Meetings.

The leadership team includes CYS Officers Kelly Okamoto-Lou (President Emeritus), Kristy Hayashida (President), Deacon Kuwaye (Secretary), and Krista Mizusaki (Treasurer). The CYS Cabinet includes Michelle Villanueva (Membership) and Eilene Ozawa (Manpower). The Board of Directors includes Marcus Kai, Yukari Kawano, Trisha Kuwada, Margaret and Jack Ma, and Michelle Sakakihara. Sports Commissioners include Basketball Co-Commissioners Greg Shiraki and Stephanie Lee; Instructional Basketball Commissioner Lynley Takaki-Nguyen; Boy's Basketball Commissioner Stacey Lam; Girl's Basketball Commissioner Brian Tang; Bowling Commissioner Dorene Yamaguchi-Sandoval; Dance Commissioners Annie Lau and Mandy Kusumoto; Golf Commissioners Alan Tang and Keiko Imazumi-Tang; Judo Commissioners Chuck and Sheri Jefferson; Tennis Commissioner Brandee Livingston; and Volleyball Commissioners Brian Olson and Arthur Akimoto. Committee chairs include Pancake Advisor Gina Yamaguchi; Pancake Chair Meredith Kondo; Pancake Assistant Chair Denise Zohr; Social Committee Advisor Mitoshi Fujio-White; Social Committee Chair Mya Duong; and Social Committee Assistant Chair Mikiko Ball, with several fundraising roles currently listed as open.

CYS notes that it is celebrating 62 years as Japanese Community Youth Service. The organization states that it gives children the chance to learn and develop skills in dance and in individual and team sports, teaches the fundamentals for good sportsmanship, and gives children the chance to make new friends and acquaintances. It also offers a variety of athletic, cultural, and community giving activities. The CYS Mother’s Day Breakfast has been canceled due to unexpected structural damage at the Buddhist Church gymnasium, which is currently considered unsafe for occupancy.
