Athena Camps groups participants by level with age-appropriate curriculum for Mini (entering grades K–2), Junior (entering grades 3–5), Middle School (entering grades 6–8), and a Coach in Training program (entering grades 9–12). The program includes progressive skill development in both sports and arts, daily sharing circles that focus on building voice and agency, and all activities are designed around empowering girls. Athena Camps offers a 1:6 ratio for the youngest campers and maintains background-checked staff, with every coach extensively trained in youth development and described as passionate about empowering young women. The program is all-girls and mentorship-driven, with an opportunity to advance from camper to coach, creating a full circle of mentorship.
Athena Camps was founded in 2011 and has been running for over 14 years, with references to 14+ years of impact and 14+ years running. Over time, the program notes that it has empowered more than 12,000 girls and also cites 13,000+ girls empowered. Athena Camps states that it is trusted since 2011 and that, of parents surveyed, 96% recommend Athena Camps. The program holds American Camp Association accreditation as an ACA accredited program. The leadership team is led by Aby Ryan, Founder & CEO of Athena Camps. Athena Camps states the vision “to build communities of girls and women who nurture and uplift each other in order to have a positive lasting impact on our world,” and uses phrases such as “All-Girls. All-Day. All-Empowerment,” “Sports + Arts Combined,” and “Female Mentorship.”
Parent feedback includes comments that the program is positive and empowering, that coaches are friendly and caring, and that parents appreciate the daily book and craft that support the theme. Parents report that their daughters came home with stories and shared what they learned, and some note growth in confidence, friendliness, and athletic ability, as well as interest in friendship messages and inspirational quotes. Several parents mention that their children were eager to return each day, looked forward to camp every summer, and in some cases wanted to keep attending until old enough to be a coach. One parent highlights that the Coach in Training program resonated with their daughter, and another notes that their child enjoyed trying a variety of physical activities in what they describe as a supportive, fun, and inclusive environment.
