About
Little League Challenger Division – California District 44 offers Challenger baseball for players with special needs. In Challenger games, each player gets a chance at bat, usually two innings are played, and no score is kept. Challenger players wear the same uniforms, shoulder patches, and safety equipment as other Little League players.
• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: Games are mostly on Sunday afternoons from mid-March through early June.
• Price: Fees vary depending upon each league.
The Little League Challenger program is for players with special needs such as autism, Down Syndrome, mental retardation, visual impairments, hearing impairments, and other health or medical issues, and all players from ages 5 and older are accepted. There are over 20 Challenger teams on the west side of the SF Bay. Parents must stay at the games in case their child needs help. Some leagues have Buddies to assist Challenger players on the field, and whenever possible, Buddies encourage players to bat and to make the plays themselves, but are always nearby to help when needed. Challenger baseball is a division of Little League and is not affiliated with any school nor school district.
Amy Jasper coordinates Challenger baseball teams within District 44. She was a Special Education high school para educator, has been a Challenger coach for over 15 years, and a special parent for over 40 years. Amy Jasper is the recipient of the 2015 City of Sunnyvale's Volunteer of the Year Award for her Challenger work with Sunnyvale Southern Little League, and the 2016 Kathy Wolff - Women in Baseball Award given by the Santa Clara Valley Hot Stove Association.
