The Academy of Classical Ballet-CALIFORNIA was established in 2009 and is owned and directed by Ms. Crystal Petzel. The Academy states that it is committed to providing a high-performance training program grounded in classical techniques and balanced with an emphasis on discipline and joy. Its curriculum is rooted in Vaganova, Royal Academy of Dance (RAD), and American Ballet Theatre (ABT) techniques, with age-appropriate progressions that prioritize both physical safety and personal growth.

Ms. Petzel has an acclaimed background in varied teaching methods including Vaganova and The Royal Academy of Dancing, has completed her American Ballet Theatre training, and is certified from Primary through Level 7. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Southern Methodist University in Dallas. Faculty member Sandra Hahs is certified by the American Ballet Theatre National Training Curriculum from Pre-Primary to Level 7. Faculty member Amanda Marquez is a certified yoga instructor through Greenpath Yoga in San Francisco and holds a BA in Sociology with a concentration in Family Studies from San Jose State University. Faculty member Maria Scott is a certified Dance for PD instructor.

The Academy describes itself as offering premier, professional, body-positive ballet training for children and adults, with an environment that celebrates every dancer’s unique journey and a tight-knit family feel that warmly welcomes each new dancer. It offers ballet classes for dancers ages 5 and up, welcoming all backgrounds, body types, and experience levels, and states that students receive classical ballet training that opens doors. Many alumni have gone on to train and work with internationally recognized institutions, including Bayerisches Staatsballett, San Francisco Ballet, Kirov Academy, and Washington Ballet, and the studio is described as a top-rated ballet studio in Campbell. Ms. Petzel is particularly proud of bringing dancers to the finals of the Youth American Grand Prix in New York City, competing among international students.

The Academy notes that it provides a safe, supportive space where confidence, artistry, and community come first, with an inclusive approach that nurtures self-expression and discipline without the pressure of competition. It also offers a Student Guild organization that gives students a chance to grow in personal development, business management, leadership, and community involvement. Ms. Petzel has conceived outreach programs that bring the arts to under-served, ESL, and special needs elementary school children.

In a testimonial, alumna and faculty member Maria Scott describes the training as a combination of challenging, supportive, and nurturing, noting detailed instruction in dance steps, vocabulary, choreography, anatomy, and cross training, and describing the community as having a tight-knit family feel with staff who care for and support the dancers.
