He has studied Shorinji Ryu Karate, Okinawan weaponry, Daito Ryu Aiki Jiu-Jitsu, and Tai Chi Chuan under Master Richard Kim and Sensei Rod Sanford, as well as Goju-Ryu Karate under Master Tomoharu Kisaki, Shito Ryu Karate under Master Kenei Mabuni, and Shotokan Karate under Master Hidetaka Nishiyama. Sensei Lucas Low has been training in martial arts since 2005, is a United States Marine, and a graduate of San Jose State University. He has been at West Valley Martial Arts since 2010, has taught there since 2012, and has studied Shorinji Ryu Karate, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Okinawan weaponry under Sensei Wakefield, along with Judo, Kung Fu, Kickboxing, and Tae Kwon Do before attending West Valley Martial Arts.
The mission of West Valley Martial Arts is for its professional staff to provide students with a martial arts experience that teaches a way of thinking and being that develops respect for themselves and others. The program states that it strives to help students maintain a calm and peaceful mind even in the most explosive of situations and that instructors teach with the intention of achieving a mind and body workout as a way of life. The stated goal is to make good people, not just good martial artists. According to the program, students will build self-confidence, respect for others, and develop self-defense skills in several martial arts styles, including jiu-jitsu, kickboxing, and traditional karate.
One review describes the instructors as “super fun, compassionate with kids, and incredibly skilled” and notes that “nothing compares to WVMA.” Another review states that “Sensei Dan has taken the commercial aspect back out of contemporary dojos and in place has built a special community of really nice teachers and students who share a common passion for learning martial arts.” A third review highlights “Self defense, confidence, respect for others, and a great way to get some much needed energy out.”
