The Origin Hip Hop Performing Arts Academy is led by owner Cheryl Armour Frye, M.A. Ed. The program states that it is dedicated to supporting the cultural, social, creative, and educational values of hip hop and to educating and inspiring youth to use the genre as a tool for learning. The academy began in June 2010 when the Frye family opened their first facility, and its programs have been a staple of the community for almost 15 years.
The Origin Hip Hop Performing Arts Academy has been voted Best Hip Hop Dance Studio in 2016 and 2017 and named Best Dance Studio in San Diego by the San Diego A-List, including first place overall and recognition for dance instruction. Its crews and teams have earned awards at competitions such as Showstoppers Dance Competition Regionals, Urban Street Jam, World of Dance events, Collaboration NorCal and SoCal, Maxt Out, Rep Yo City, Set It Off San Diego, and the Hip Hop International USA and World Championships, including placements, medals, and finalist standings across multiple divisions. The academy has also been invited to participate in the nationally televised Hollywood Christmas Parade and has qualified to represent San Diego and the United States at events such as The World Dance Crew Championships in New Zealand and future Hip Hop International World Championships.
Community involvement has included support from organizations and businesses such as Young Artist Music Academy, Walmart, Sycuan Casino, La Mesa–Spring Valley School District, San Diego A-list, Yelp, and The Better Business Bureau, along with other community partners and private benefactors. The program has held a Dancing Santa Toy Drive serving over 25 low-income children, opened one of the first drug-free, alcohol-free weekend teen dance party nights in San Diego called Club Origin, and opened the first Black-owned haunted hip hop attraction in San Diego. It has also partnered with Westfield Mission Valley Mall San Diego to open a new academy.
The Origin Hip Hop Performing Arts Academy notes several firsts, including being the first Hip Hop Education Studio in San Diego in June 2010, being among the first hip hop programs to bring a dance program into a local school district during school hours through Hip Hop 4 Health, and producing and directing a feature film with a red carpet premiere in Los Angeles titled “OrigiNation: Return to HHI.” It also reports being the first studio to produce a Mini Summer Pre-Game Concert at Petco Park before an MLB Padres game with over 5,000 in attendance and the first dance academy to perform at the NFL LA Rams Game Season Opener with over 50,000 in attendance.
