About

Project ARTstART is the Claremont Lewis Museum of Art’s signature arts education program that includes exhibition-based art lessons, art appreciation classes and activities, and art-making. The program offers free art-making workshops, simple do-at-home art projects, and hands-on workshops, along with live music, lectures, discussion panels, and behind-the-scenes tours. Project ARTstART creates opportunities for youth to teach youth about art-making, local history, and careers in the arts.

• Ages: 8–18 years old
• Schedule: Museum open Thursday–Sunday with daytime and early evening hours
• Price: From July through September 2026, museum visitors get to set their own admission price.

Launched in the fall of 2011, Project ARTstART serves 100 high school students, called ARTstARTers, who are trained to teach art lessons to elementary students. ARTstARTers teach lessons inspired by exhibitions at the Claremont Lewis Museum of Art and local art history to upper graders at all seven public elementary schools in Claremont. ARTstARTers also serve approximately 125 students a month with the AfterARTs series, which brings free art-making workshops to after-school programs. Teams of high school students in Project ARTstART have prepared a series of simple do-at-home art projects presented as fun 5-minute videos on the Claremont Museum of Art YouTube channel.

CLMA’s mission is to celebrate the community’s rich artistic legacy and promote the cultural vitality of the region. Project ARTstART is produced solely by the Claremont Lewis Museum of Art in partnership with the Claremont Unified School District. The Claremont Lewis Museum of Art features the work of Claremont area artists, offers live music with local bands on its patio during opening receptions and Claremont Art Walk, and offers monthly hands-on workshops led by local artists through its Art Night Out series.
