About
Little Dipper Aquatic Center offers water safety lessons and swim lessons using an approach that emphasizes rolling and floating or stabilizing on the back. Weekly classes focus on proper skills and technique that match each swimmer’s age and developmental ability, with skills taught in a patient, consistent, and positive manner. Swimmers work on their skills each week according to their swim level until the skills are internalized and become second nature.
• Ages: 0–18 years old
• Schedule: Class options are available Monday–Saturday, with varying daytime and afternoon hours, and Sunday schedules that vary.
Little Dipper Aquatic Center states that all children can learn to swim when given a consistent and repetitive structure, and that expectations are based on each swimmer’s individual level of awareness and capacity. The program emphasizes water safety as the ultimate goal, with repetition of properly performed skills leading to mastery and progression from gross to more subtle movements. In more advanced classes, basics are still practiced to keep the integrity of the skill while refinements, more advanced technique, and endurance are introduced. When a swimmer has mastered the skills for their level, they graduate to the next swim level in the program, where additional skills, techniques, and strokes are introduced.
Little Dipper Aquatic Center describes its method as an award winning method that has saved lives and provided swimmers with lifelong skills. The program highlights a hospitable, family friendly environment, with generational Little Dipper swimmers and staff, including some staff who were Little Dipper graduates. Some staff were original parents and teachers from 40 years ago, and some original instructors from 40 years ago are still teaching and training newer staff members.
Little Dipper Swim School was established in 1981 and has been serving the East Bay for 43 years. The swim school has been owned and operated by the current owner, Joy, for 43 years. The program previously operated from the backyard of the owner’s home for 30 years and at one point operated out of seven different satellite pools in the East Bay. The program notes its long history with East Bay Area families and expresses thanks for all their years of service.
