Touyou No Chie Jujitsu Aikido began in April 2010 in the studio of Sylvan Martial Arts. The dojo describes its mission as working together as a dojo family to push limits in a safe environment, with a focus on getting stronger, faster, and more skillful without growing ego, being disrespectful, or inflicting injuries, and describes itself as not just a dojo but a family, or “ohana,” that has fun and sticks together while growing together. The program has strong roots from the Hawaiian islands and describes itself as a big mixing pot of Asian culture with “a little bit of aloha and a little bit arigato,” and it refers to its members as “ohana” (family).
The leadership team includes Derek Baure Sensei, Sensei Nick, Sensei Derek, Sensei Steven, and Sensei Ryan. Baure Sensei studied Exercise Physiology and Kinesiology at San Jose State and completed a Master’s Degree in Kinesiology at St. Mary’s College. Baure Sensei has coached several martial artists, including two silver medalists at the Jujitsu America National Tournament and several gold medalists at the Mokomoko Invitational and Sacramento Valley Championships, and has earned gold medals in various black belt tournaments, including being the 2016 National Sports Jujitsu Champion. The dojo offers a free trial class and runs a Dojo Run group that prepares for events such as the Color Run, Tough Mudder, and Spartan Race, and it participates in Gladiator Runs, Spartan Races, beach trainings, bowling events, movie nights, and other outings. The dojo shares studio space with Mires Martial Arts and has a partnership with Elite Sports and Born Tough workout gear.
