Kesem’s mission is to create a world where every child who has a parent with a cancer diagnosis or has lost a parent to cancer is never alone, and to support these children through and beyond their parent’s cancer with free, fun-filled creative programs and a lasting community. Programs are led by passionate and expertly trained college students, Kesem alumni, and staff. Kesem’s programs are clinically proven to improve children’s well-being, sense of belonging, emotional expression, coping skills, and confidence, according to a peer-reviewed paper from Georgetown University’s Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center. Kesem is guided by core values of Continuous Learning, Accountability, Resilience, Empathy, and Commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. One former Kesem camper and college student volunteer shared that, “Because of Kesem, I am a better human... I've learned what it means to lead with empathy. I've grown stronger, kinder, and more open-hearted. I've found a family that inspires me to be my best self.” A Kesem parent described Camp Kesem as “magical” for their daughter and family and said it provided support beyond what they imagined and lifted their daughter up when she needed it.
