STAR Education’s mission is to offer extended educational, recreational, and enrichment programs to students, support and enhance school curriculum, improve student achievement, and expand the cultural base of young people through innovative, quality programs offered by highly qualified instructors. The organization offers in-person programs for classwork and homework completion and enrichment, and all in-person locations include large outdoor spaces. Its stated priority is to assist students in completing district assignments, help develop study skills for lifelong academic success, and provide a variety of enrichment opportunities, and the social emotional well being of every child is described as a top priority and woven into everything they do. Online programs include academic support, enrichment, recreation, and special events such as maker fairs, an inventor’s station, and art exhibits, and the program also provides Supplemental Educational Services for schools and school districts and offers academic and enrichment programs during the school day in more than 40 school districts throughout California.

STAR Education is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and describes itself as a charitable non-profit that has been selected the leader in innovative educational programming and community-based cultural enrichment projects for over 37 years. It is the largest provider of Gifted & Talented Education (G.A.T.E.) instruction in California, providing services to over 60 school districts, and school districts throughout California have contracted STAR to provide tutoring in math, literacy, and STEAM education for over 20 years. STAR services more than 500 schools in over 60 school districts, reaching over a million students and their families every year, and STAR benefits over a million learners throughout California and comes to school campuses in over 60 school districts throughout California, Tennessee, and New York. The organization states that it follows and exceeds protocols set by the CDC and the County of Los Angeles whether in-person, on campuses, or in family homes, and that staff is trained in strict protocols that have kept children, families, and staff safe while operating programs in three school districts in the Sacramento area and in five Los Angeles campuses.

STAR Education began its work in the 1980s, and in 1993 it was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. It has been a supplemental education provider since 1998 and describes its history as “Excellence Since 1986,” noting that it has provided educational services to more than 60 school districts throughout California for over 30 years and has been selected the leader in innovative educational programming and community-based cultural enrichment projects for over 37 years. What began over 25 years ago with two innovative parents has grown into a large-scale effort. Husband and wife team Katya and Erick Bozzi Sr. began STAR Education’s work in the 1980s, and in 1997 Erick Sr. and Katya Bozzi and their children, Erick II and Katiana, founded the STAR Eco Station as a subsidiary of STAR Education.

The leadership team includes President – Executive Director Founder Katya Bozzi; Vice President – Co-Founder Erick Bozzi II; Secretary – Co-Founder Katiana Bozzi; Vice President – Stephen Nemeth; and Board Members Amanda Levy, Arlene Klasky, Thomas Suarez, and Cathal Kerr. STAR Education describes itself as a non-profit putting children, families, and school communities first, and it works with students, families, schools, and communities to provide educational and cultural enrichment opportunities. It has partnerships with government agencies, private organizations, parents, and community groups, and it recognized the need to gather community partners, universities, and local leaders to rally around public schools. The organization has a partnership with the Hermosa Beach City School District, and the STAR Eco Station was founded in partnership with US Fish and Wildlife as an environmental science museum and exotic wildlife rescue facility where visitors can learn about preservation of the planet and interact with rescued endangered and exotic wildlife. This organization is supported, in part, by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture.

A testimonial from Laura McGaughey, Superintendent of Culver City Unified, states: “Thanks to your efforts, LA Ballona students have a fun and enriching after-school experience that has contributed to their progress and resulted in significant gains in test scores.”
