About
Improve Your English Tutoring Services offers 1-to-1 English tutoring that focuses on reading, writing, test preparation, college essays, and rigorous grammar instruction. Students work with classic literature and complete weekly writing with detailed feedback. The program also offers college counseling and writing classes for kids.
• Schedule: English-only tutoring available seven days a week, all year long.
For over 20 years, the program has worked with students on reading, writing, test scores, and college essays, and since 2004, Improve Your English has provided English tutors. Tutor applicants must have two years of professional teaching experience, are tested on grammar and literature, and must give a teaching demo, and fewer than 5% of applicants pass these employment tests. Most tutors have worked for the organization for five years or more. The president of Improve Your English is Nat Crawford.
The program uses a systematic curriculum for reading and writing, including a comprehensive diagnostic assessment and a qualification test to assess each student’s current English skills before beginning a personalized tutoring program. Its approach includes a focus on rigorous grammar instruction, the use of challenging classic literature, and weekly writing with detailed feedback. The program offers an Apple Watch Guarantee that provides a full refund plus an Apple Watch if a child attends every lesson for a month, completes all homework, and the parent still does not think this is the best English tutoring the child has ever received.
Parents and students have shared detailed feedback about their experiences. One parent from San Jose reports that their son’s vocabulary, reading, and writing skills improved and describes the tutor as professional, supportive, and knowledgeable in all subject areas he teaches. Another parent from Sunnyvale reports that a daughter’s STAR reading test score rose from 900 to 1,200 in less than a year and that the daughter became more interested in reading English language books. A student from Harvard, Class of 2009, states that this was the only English teacher or professor who made them love what they were studying. A student from San Jose reports being the only student in a high school English class to score 100% on a difficult grammar test. A parent from Palo Alto notes that this is the first reading class their sons have not wanted to quit. A student from NYU, Class of 2017, thanks the tutor for being a role model for study habits and proper grammar and writes that “literature harbors the greatest goldmine for human understanding.” Another student reports arriving knowing almost nothing about grammar and reading and, after two years, describes drastic improvement in writing and critical reading and learning how to analyze and connect words rather than skim. John Bender, Professor of English at Stanford University, writes that many assignments in the Improve Your English curriculum resemble the work he did in middle and high school English classes, including learning English grammar, completing challenging writing assignments, and reading classic literature, and states that this curriculum will show the way for students who want to read and write at the highest level.
