Founded in 1957, the Daly City Police Athletic League was the first incorporated Police Athletic League in California and is described as the first Police Athletic League in California. Its mission is to build a partnership between youth, the police, and the community through recreational, athletic, and educational programs designed to encourage youth to develop good citizenship and leadership, reduce the incidence of juvenile delinquency, and improve quality of life as young people grow up to become successful and contributing members of the community. The board is made up of 18 volunteer board members from Daly City Police Department personnel and community members, past and present, and the board is described as being made entirely of volunteers. The Daly City Police Athletic League is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, and all monies are described as going directly into the sports programs.
In partnership with the Daly City Library and Recreation Services Department and other local athletic organizations, the Daly City Police Athletic League helps 700–800 children play scheduled sports each year. Through independent fundraising and support from community partners, it helps offset costs to families so hundreds of boys and girls can take part in sports camps, organized leagues, and the Police Explorer Program, and it is described as helping thousands of boys and girls by providing funds to allow children to play multiple sports and participate in the Police Explorer Program. The organization has an educational component called the Daly City Police Athletic League Educational Scholarship Foundation, referred to as PAL-ED. It is described as “Supporting youth through athletics, education, and community” and as “about shaping lives for good citizenship,” “about building character in our youth,” “about cultivating in our youngsters an appreciation for, and the ability to achieve, the very best that life has to offer,” “about caring,” “about hope,” and “the field of dreams that inspire kids to grow, to feel good about themselves, and to accomplish things that cannot be barricaded within the confines of rundown neighborhoods or rundown self-esteem.” Rich Brewer was inducted into the Daly City Sports Hall of Fame in 2007.
