The ABK Collective is an outdoor movement and martial arts academy whose outdoor academy offers training practiced in nature’s classroom. Its teaching methodology is rooted in a deep understanding of child development and education, and instructors bring early childhood education credentials and extensive outdoor teaching experience to every class. ABK (for children ages 5 and above) focuses on building character traits such as confidence, empathy, self-control, integrity, curiosity, perseverance, and optimism, while the MAA: The Martial Arts Alphabet program (for children ages 3.5–5) is designed specifically for the emotional and physical needs of young children and incorporates awareness of the sights and sounds of the alphabet. ABK is a style of martial arts that has many different drills that quickly switch from one structured activity to another structured activity, which helps students diagnosed with A.D.D. develop focus.
The ABK Collective blends the discipline of traditional martial arts with modern movement and holistic health practices, and offers ABK (American Budo Kwan), RBSD (Reality Based Self Defense), Defense to BJJ, Tai Chi, and UMA Functional Fitness. Its Reality Based Self Defense program is designed and constantly developed by Master Anthony Lerma, and training is offered outdoors, harnessing California’s mild climate and natural landscapes while practicing on natural terrain to challenge balance, coordination, and awareness. Lotus Circle Tai Chi is available in 45-minute private lessons.
The program’s mission states that it is dedicated to helping individuals of all ages move better, grow stronger, and live with greater balance and purpose, and that every class is designed to cultivate confidence, empathy, self-control, integrity, curiosity, perseverance, and optimism—qualities that strengthen both character and community. The ABK Collective services the communities of Danville, San Ramon, Alamo, Walnut Creek, Lafayette, Orinda, Montclair, Piedmont and beyond.
America’s Best Karate, which is part of the ABK story, was founded in 1993 by 5-time World Champion George Chung, with Cynthia Rothrock as his partner at founding, and 3-time World Champion Anthony Chan as a partner of George Chung. After three years as Program Director for the East Bay locations of America’s Best Karate, Master Anthony Lerma became the Chief Instructor and owner of America’s Best Karate of Danville in 1998, and brings 32 years of experience. America’s Best Karate gained notoriety through teaching professional athletes such as Joe Montana, Dwight Clark, and Ronnie Lott of the San Francisco 49ers, as well as other famous martial artists and athletes, and its founders worked on the Emmy award–winning show “Adventures with Kanga Roddy.”
Testimonials describe the RBSD program as a practical self-defense system designed and constantly developed by Master Lerma, with online and in-person training that includes sets of “basic eights” and regularly updated drills. Other testimonials describe Master Lerma delivering over 30 years of practical and formal training to each lesson, advancing students’ knowledge of the art, the purpose of each technique, and its history, and note experiences such as weight loss and increased body definition. Parents also describe children with autism and children who have difficulty staying seated in school participating in Master Lerma’s programs, including the A to Z program for beginning children and Tae Kwon Do, and refer to ABK as a place where their children focus on the task at hand and experience karate as “a very focused sport.”
