About

Quest Therapeutic Camps includes daily group therapy, a cognitive behavioral therapy program, play, specially developed hands-on therapy activities, discussion, a Camper of the Day ceremony, and singing silly camp songs. Campers are assigned to groups based on their age, gender, and functional level, and three counselors direct each group. Campers are supported with praise and points, and they can use their points at a weekly store, with every camper earning Camper of the Day before they leave.

• Schedule: Intensive 6-week, 30 hours/week summer program, plus a 30-week, 2 hours/week afterschool program offered in three 10-week afterschool sessions

Quest Therapeutic Camps offers afterschool programs throughout the school year for children and teens with mild to moderate emotional and social problems, using a holistic approach to mental health with a focus on coping mechanisms and therapeutic activities. The program uses individualized treatment plans, with individualized goals established by the camper, parents, and staff, and goals developed based on parent and child input, staff observations, and IEP goals related to emotional and social functioning. All children with mild to moderate emotional and social issues are welcome to attend, and the afterschool program has been found to be an effective intervention alone.

Quest Therapeutic Camps was founded by Robert Field, PhD, a CA Licensed Psychologist (PSY 5705), who opened his private practice specializing in work with children and adolescents in 1978. From the first year with 20 campers per week, Quest has grown to over 100 campers per week with 5 therapists and 21 counselors. The summer staff includes 5 therapists with at least a master's degree in counseling, and many of the counselor staff are working on graduate training in counseling or have significant experience with children. Few programs have the same combination of mental health professionals and counselor staff, and Quest continues to operate in-person programs at a public school in the San Ramon Valley School District.

Quest Therapeutic Camps provides a combined recreational and therapeutic program using play as the focus of intervention, along with daily group therapy and necessary intervention to assist counselors. Three research studies demonstrated the summer program’s strong treatment effect, showing significant progress in emotional and social functioning. Quest’s therapeutic approach and camp setting are described as unique to Quest, and Quest is an approved ESY program that works closely with school districts to provide a unique individualized program for each camper.

Quest is vendorized by the Regional Center of the East Bay, and RCEB clients must use a code to register. RCEB clients can join the afterschool programs with RCEB coverage, and partial scholarships are available thanks to the Autistic Spectrum Disorder Foundation. One parent stated, “Quest keeps my kid engaged, and all the other programs we've tried have failed to do that.”
