Mike and Terri's Davis Tutoring Center (Academic Improvement Center) offers instruction in math, science, English, Spanish, and social studies. The program provides academic coaching for grades 7 through 12 and can include help with AP physics homework, an English essay, and calculus, including all of these in the same session if needed. Students are encouraged to use the center’s resources, and many students spend several hours a day there.

Mike and Terri's Davis Tutoring Center, officially known as Academic Improvement Center, opened in 1997 and has tutored students from Davis and surrounding communities since then. For many students, the office becomes a school away from school, where they have one more teacher who can fill in instructional holes for just about all of their classes, with tutoring individualized to meet the specific needs of each student. The business is almost 100% driven by client referrals, not by advertising.
Students work exclusively with the co-owners, Michael Leonard, Ph.D., and Teresa (Terri) Leonard, M.D.; the center does not hire other tutors as employees. Both Mike and Terri tutor math, science, Spanish, and English, so students are not limited to a subject-specific tutor. A student can get help with AP physics homework, an English essay, and calculus all in the same session.
Michael Leonard earned a bachelor's degree in geophysics from the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at the University of California at Berkeley and received the departmental citation for the highest academic achievement in his graduating class. He earned a doctorate in geophysics and State of California Teaching Credentials in math and science, and he has been a research scientist, consultant, and educator, including classroom teaching up to the college level. Teresa Leonard graduated Phi Beta Kappa and summa cum laude from U.C. Berkeley with a degree in psychology and State of California Teaching Credentials in math and science, attended medical school at U.C. Davis, graduating in the top tier of her class, and has worked as a classroom teacher in math and science at the middle school and high school levels. Both Mike and Terri maintain active State of California Teaching Credentials in both math and science.
The center maintains a physical tutoring center rather than meeting students online or at coffee shops or other locations. It is consistently recognized as the “Best Tutoring Center in Yolo County” by the readers of the Davis Enterprise.
