About
Poppy Preschool Cooperative is a child-centered, play-based preschool where children take part in social interaction and play activities. The program offers varied play environments and continuous social experiences as a means of teaching and conveying important skills for school readiness. Teachers provide a planned, developmentally appropriate, hands-on curriculum that is guided by a philosophy of mutual care, respect, and understanding.
• Ages: 1–5 years old
Poppy Preschool Cooperative offers several multi-age programs for children between the ages of 1 and 5 years, with programs that grow with children from curious 1-year-olds to 5-year-olds ready for kindergarten. It is a non-profit, parent co-operative preschool staffed by certified early childhood educators. The school is licensed by the California State Department of Social Services and follows its regulations, as well as the policies set by the school’s board of directors.
Formerly known as DCCNS Cooperative Preschool, Poppy Preschool Cooperative traces its history to DCCNS, which was established in 1973 as an outreach of Davis Community Church. The program’s mission is to foster social-emotional and academic development through a child-led, play-based curriculum, while also supporting parents and creating community through conversations, events, and experiences. The school creates an environment in which families from all faiths, backgrounds, and traditions feel welcome, comfortable, and valued, and its goal is to provide a helpful and varied environment in which children can develop socially, as well as physically, emotionally, and mentally.
As a cooperative preschool, families and teachers work together, with parents helping in the classroom and supporting the school, which builds a close-knit community where children and families make lasting friendships. Testimonials describe teachers as knowledgeable, caring, dedicated, nurturing, curious, creative, professional, patient, and supportive, and note that families value participating in the classroom and being part of the co-op community. One testimonial from DavisWiki.org states, “You will not find a preschool with more caring, professional, and patient teachers than at DCCNS (now Poppy Preschool).”
