About
Kapiliwaiokeao Papa Hula offers papa hula in kahiko (traditional hula) and 'auana (contemporary hula). Classes also include oli and ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi as part of the learning experience. The program states that hula is not just a dance, and that there is language, culture, and a sacredness to hula that must be honored.
• Ages: 0–18 years old
• Schedule: Class options Monday–Thursday during morning and evening hours, and Saturday mornings
The program’s mission is to maintain and perpetuate beliefs, cultural practices, philosophies, and traditions of kānaka ʻŌiwi (indigenous people of Hawaiʻi) through various papa (classes) and halawai (workshops) through hula, through oli, and through ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi. The program notes that hula welcomes all ages, all genders, and all levels, and that anytime is a good time to hula. It also states that if a learner is not comfortable showing what they are learning in papa hula in front of a large audience, they will not be required to do so. The program invites interested families to send a message for a free trial class.
