Calphin Swim Academy was founded in 2003 by Head Coach Xiaohong Wang and her husband Joseph He, who has an MBA and a computer science degree. Head Coach Xiaohong Wang is an Olympic Medalist and World Champion. The program’s philosophy states: “We believe swimming is a life-saving skill that all kids need to master. We believe swimming as a sport enhances physical and mental fitness. We believe swimming promotes confidence, willpower and enjoyment of life, – all are needed to prepare young people to succeed in a competitive world.” The stated goal of Calphin is to help students establish foundational skills in a peer environment. The Lifeguard Class provides lifeguard training with American Red Cross certification, and the lifeguard program is American Red Cross Certified. The program uses a Calphin Continuum year-round enrollment system with monthly tuition billing and continuous spot reservation, flexible scheduling with classes available 7 days a week, small class ratios tailored by age and level, safer small groups with structured instruction in an indoor heated pool, professional coaches focused on stroke techniques in a 25-yard indoor pool, animal-themed skill levels from Starter to Master Barracuda, a parallel coaching method for customized learning within a group setting, and a Swim Team with a maximum of 36 seats and 2–3 meets per year, along with a Free Trial for ages 3+ with no pressure and no commitment.
One parent from Danville, CA stated, “I would not hesitate to recommend this school to my friends. Some will be joining us this summer for their Sprint sessions. I look forward to seeing how my children grow in their swim skills here.” Another parent commented that the program “…not only focuses on improving kids’ swimming speed, but the posture of the swimmers, which is fundamental and also very important. My daughter has recently made great progress on her swimming skills.” A further parent shared, “…I truly feel they alway think in the best interest of the swimmer. They will never hold the child back or push the child beyond what they believe they are ready for…” Another comment noted, “Coach Wong is terrific … who really makes you learn the proper strokes.”
