Calphin Swim Academy was founded in 2003. The Head Coach and Co-Founder is Xiaohong Wang, an Olympic Medalist and World Champion, who founded the academy with her husband Joseph He, who has an MBA and a computer science degree. The program follows a Mastery-Based Philosophy distilled from 30 years of training and focuses on Learn-To-Swim programs and Stroke-Refinement-Programs, using a Mastery-Based Curriculum and a parallel coaching method in which each swimmer progresses at his or her own level within a group setting. The program states that it believes swimming is a life-saving skill that all kids need to master, that swimming as a sport enhances physical and mental fitness, and that swimming promotes confidence, willpower and enjoyment of life, which it states are needed to prepare young people to succeed in a competitive world. It offers year-round swim lessons, including a Swim Team with 3 classes weekly year-round and 2–3 meets per year, and a Free Trial for ages 3 and up. Classes take place in safe, indoor heated pools in a pleasant indoor environment.
The Lifeguard class is an American Red Cross Certified Lifeguard program. The program also notes that its goal is to help Calphin students establish foundational skills in a peer environment, whether students want to be competitive racers or want to enjoy swimming.
Parent feedback includes comments that the school is recommended to friends and that some families plan to join Sprint sessions, and one parent reports seeing great progress in a child’s swimming skills. Another parent notes that the program focuses on both swimming speed and posture, and another states that staff think in the best interest of the swimmer and do not hold a child back or push beyond what they believe the child is ready for. One parent describes Coach Wong as someone who really makes swimmers learn the proper strokes.
