About
Perspectives Photo School offers year-round photography classes, youth summer camps, individual and small group lessons, workshops, and personalized sessions. Teens take daily lessons to develop the technical skills to use a DSLR or mirrorless camera, practice compositional techniques, work on writing exercises to develop a personal photography voice and style, and respond to creative prompts to think outside of the frame. The program also includes developing a personal project and photography portfolio, editing photographs, building a portfolio or application portfolio for a degree, and learning to manipulate light in the studio or outdoors.

Perspectives Photo School offers a mentorship program for high school students, week-long photography classes for teens planned for spring and summer 2026, and completely customizable individual and small group sessions that can fit the size of a group, a corporate event, or a specific area of photography. The program includes a variety of locations throughout the week for hands-on learning in the field and travel to Bay Area locations for photography. It also offers summer camp early registration savings, youth camp internships, and collaborating arts program openings.
Founder and Director Tara Layman received a Master of Fine Arts in Photography in 2012 and has been teaching photography classes since 2015. The program’s mission states that it focuses on photography as storytelling, self-expression, and fostering connections, and it aims to support individuals of all origins, experience levels, and gender expressions in exploring the world through photography while enhancing technical skills, developing a unique visual voice, and building confidence to share perspectives. Perspectives Photo School describes a vibrant and inclusive community, integrates multiple disciplines such as environmental consciousness and social inclusivity, and includes special collaborations with local organizations for inspired creativity and portfolio expansion.
