About

Encinitas Fencing Academy offers fencing that includes warmup, group instruction, bouting practice, and private lessons. Classes follow a set daily structure that starts with warmup, moves into group instruction, and then finishes with bouting practice.

• Ages: 9–18 years old
• Schedule: Classes run Monday through Thursday from 6:00–8:30 p.m., holidays excepted

Encinitas Fencing Academy lists David “Lucky” Polakoski and Aaron Kandlik as coaches. Coach Lucky has been competing in fencing since 2000 at local, regional, national, and international levels, has held an “A” rating since 2006, won the Bladerunner tournament at UCSD, was a four-year member of the UCSD fencing team, and served as Men’s Épée Squad Captain during his junior and senior years. He has given private lessons to kids as young as 9 and adults as old as 60. Aaron Kandlik started coaching in 1998 and has coached at three NCAA fencing schools, two USA Fencing National Training Centers, and several private clubs. His students have competed at US National Championships, World Cups, and Cadet World Championships, and have ranged in age from 5 to 89 and in skill from beginner to Olympian. Coach Kandlik is a Level 4 Coach certified by the USA Fencing Coaches College in all three fencing disciplines, has been a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and a Level 1 Weightlifting coach, and holds a BFA in Studio Art while currently pursuing a degree in music composition.

Encinitas Fencing Academy states that it is dedicated not only to the development of athletes, but the development of individuals and community. The program highlights “Fencing for Everyone,” bringing the sport of fencing to Encinitas, and notes that fencing currently has one of the lowest injury rates of any Olympic sport. It describes fencing as a low-impact and low-contact sport that is suited to both older and younger athletes and states that fencing strives to be inclusive, welcoming all to participate in their chosen events.
