Starlings Volleyball, USA began in 1996 with a single team at Lincoln High School in San Diego, California, and has grown to serve more than 3,000 girls in more than 75 clubs. Starlings programs can be found in over 70 cities and Native American reservations nationwide, with approximately 75 clubs in more than 50 cities and Native American reservations throughout the U.S. Starlings Volleyball, USA is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, and its mission is to positively impact the lives of at-risk girls through the sport of volleyball.

Starlings dues, if any, are a fraction of most junior club costs, with the goal that no girl is turned away because of inability to pay. Beginning in 1996 with a single inner-city San Diego team, Starlings has grown to become the nation's largest junior volleyball club, serving more than 3,000 girls in more than 75 clubs.

One student, Lili Sun, 10th grade, states that “Starlings isn't just about volleyball. It teaches us how to set goals and how to get across the bumps in the road we're all maneuvering along — the road to success.” Deitre Collins-Parker, head women’s coach at San Diego State University and a starter on the 1988 U.S. Olympic volleyball team, notes that volleyball is not affordable for many families and that Starlings gives young athletes a chance to continue playing and competing after the high school season, and that San Diego State coaches have gone to Starlings tournaments to recruit and have seen many talented athletes.
