The club director for Starlings SD - Escondido is Joanne Lin. Starlings began in 1996 with a single inner-city San Diego team and has grown to become what it describes as the nation's largest junior volleyball club. The stated mission of Starlings is to positively impact the lives of at-risk girls through the sport of volleyball.
Starlings Volleyball, USA is described as a 501(c)3 nonprofit and an IRS-registered, 501(c)3 charitable nonprofit organization, and U.S.-based donations are tax-deductible. The organization states that every girl deserves the opportunity to play club volleyball regardless of socioeconomic background or level of play, and that Starlings programs now operate in over 70 cities and Native American reservations nationwide. It also states that all donations go to support Starlings volleyball programs and that Starlings dues, if any, are a fraction of most junior club costs, with the goal that no girl is turned away because of inability to pay.
One student testimonial says that “Starlings isn't just about volleyball. It teaches us how to set goals and how to get across the bumps in the road we're all maneuvering along — the road to success.” Another testimonial from Deitre Collins-Parker, head women’s coach at San Diego State University and a starter on the 1988 U.S. Olympic volleyball team, describes Starlings as giving young athletes a chance to continue playing and competing after the high school season and notes that San Diego State coaches have attended Starlings tournaments to recruit athletes.
