Boys & Girls Clubs of the Redwoods is a youth development program for children and teens and was established in 1938. The organization is led by Executive Director Monica Rose, a 20-year veteran of the organization, along with a leadership team that includes Meaghan Seely (Finance Director), Christy Johnson (Office Manager), Jared Vodden (Clubhouse Unit Director), Kenny Williams (Eureka Teen Center Unit Director), Dallas Winfield-Perez (McKinleyville Teen Center Unit Director), Chad Brown (Pacific Union Unit Director), Raven Majors (Teen Court Program Director), and Julia Dunn (Teen Lounge Program Director). The mission of Boys & Girls Clubs of the Redwoods is to empower youth to reach their full potential as responsible, caring, and productive citizens through professionally led programs and activities in a safe, supportive, and healthy environment. The organization describes its philosophy as a Youth Development Strategy that focuses on four “senses”: competence, usefulness, belonging, and power or influence, and states that all programs and activities are designed to maximize opportunities for young people to acquire these four senses. The organization reports having over 1,500 members and typically serving over 300 members daily, and states that its after school programs are a big asset to working parents. It also states that Humboldt County has had some of the highest numbers for childhood abuse, neglect, and trauma in California, and that its mission is to reach out to these children with programs and services that promote and enhance their development by instilling a sense of competence, usefulness, and belonging. The organization states that it envisions healthy, empowered, and engaged youth who appreciate and respect themselves, each other, their families, the community, and the environment.
