About
Fairfax Cycling Camp Summer Mountain Bike Camp focuses on mountain biking and related outdoor activities. Campers take part in rides and games such as Capture the Flag and Kingo, along with team building and cooperative games. The program also connects with other offerings from Fairfax Cycling Camp, including after school rides, summer camps, overnight trips, youth backpacking trips, and rock climbing.
• Ages: 8–18 years old
• Schedule: Day program from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM
• Price: Tuition is $565 per week, with a $45 Early Bird Discount for registrations before April 1st.
The camp states that its goal is “to provide an athletically challenging and empowering experience in an environment of physical and emotional safety and support.” Fairfax Cycling Camp is family-owned and was founded by a local school teacher, and each week is staffed by one or two adult leaders, often a teacher, along with college and high school-aged counselors. The staff includes Emile (First Aid and CPR certified), Mitch Brown (elementary school teacher, Wilderness First Aid and CPR certified), Eileen (licensed psychotherapist, creator and leader of Artemis Circle, Wilderness First Aid certified), Matt Penwell (educator and administrator, First Aid and CPR certified), Jake Simon (MA in Counseling from SSU), Andrew (middle school science teacher, certified Wilderness First Responder), and Skylar (counselor for seven years who also helps run the business in the off season). The program maintains a staff-to-camper ratio of at least 5:1 and offers both all-girls groups and coed groups in certain weeks, with ride groups arranged by camper ability and a wide range of experience from beginners to riders who are highly skilled and fit enough to ride competitively. One soft camper t-shirt is included, and the camp notes that participants who have the best time tend to have the right kind of gear, with a blog post available on choosing the right bike and equipment requirements. Fairfax Cycling Camp has a Mentorship Training Program that gives counselors more extensive training and growth opportunities, and it has donated to several schools or organizations. A counselor named Elliott describes Fairfax Cycling Camp as “a safe, and supportive environment for young riders, where they can be themselves, and have a great time.”
