The Salvation Army camp counselors are equipped to help children navigate the complicated emotions and struggles that can arise for those who experience poverty and related hardships, and they are trained to recognize the effects of the stressors of poverty on children and respond to a child’s emotional needs. The Salvation Army’s network of free summer camps allows kids of all ages, despite their family’s income level, to have a safe, fun, unforgettable summer camp experience, with outdoor recreation, educational activities, and hands-on projects, including educational and non-sports programs in addition to sports. Summer programs are available for kids from low-income households, and camp programs provide thousands of kids of all ages with experiences such as learning to swim, playing sports, making music, creating arts and crafts, and participating in scouting under supervision by trained counselors. Camp sessions are programmed with hands-on activities that spark curiosity and collaboration and foster education, and summer camp programs provide a safe, structured, and positive environment, keeping kids of all skill levels active and engaged. Research cited by the program states that spending time outdoors in natural environments can improve a student’s test scores, reduce aggressive behavior and increase positive social interactions, and speed physical healing for children, and most summer camps accept state-provided child care subsidies and offer scholarships.

The Salvation Army states that it is one of the largest social service providers in the United States and is committed to serving neighbors in need of assistance in every zip code throughout the nation. Families can locate the service center nearest to them to find assistance or volunteer opportunities through Salvation Army food pantries, shelters, financial assistance programs, summer camps, and more. The Salvation Army describes itself as an international movement and an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church, with a message based on the Bible, a ministry motivated by the love of God, and a mission to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.
