About
Fremont Shotokan Karate offers training in traditional Japanese karate with a focus on Shotokan karate. Classes focus on technique, fitness, mobility, and self-defense principles. The program is open to returning students, beginners, and those who have trained in other styles of karate or martial arts, as long as they bring a positive attitude, commitment, and discipline.
• Ages: 7–18 years old
• Schedule: Classes are offered three days a week, with options on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays for beginners and continuing students
Fremont Shotokan Karate accepts students ages 7 and up, and people of all ages, sizes, and fitness levels can practice karate in this program. The dojo has three dedicated instructors with over 80 years of training experience between them. Fremont Shotokan Karate was founded in 2006 by Bernardo Mercado Sensei and Harry Imamura Sensei, and for over two years a devoted group of karateka continued training informally in the park with Bernardo Mercado Sensei and Talila Golan Senpai. The program’s mission is to train students in traditional karate as a self-defense system that also enhances self-control, concentration skills, physical and mental fitness, stress reduction, and increased confidence, while keeping training simple, rigorous, and practical. Fremont Shotokan Karate shares its dojo with Tri City Aikido and recommends Anthony Campagna Sensei and his students for those interested in Aikido. Today, the program is in the process of rebuilding and invites students to join as it continues to offer training connected to its long-running legacy.
