About
The Tutoring Program takes place within the buildings of Wat Buddhanusorn, where classrooms are located in the lower level multipurpose hall of the main temple building. This multipurpose hall is also used for performances and meetings, and the same building includes several offices, a music studio and rehearsal hall for the Thai Student Orchestra, and storage areas. The upper level main hall of the temple building is used for Buddhist ceremonies, festivals, teaching, and daily chanting and meditation, and it contains a central altar with a large golden Earth-Touching Buddha and a hand-painted mural depicting traditional Buddhist and Thai legends and life scenes.
Wat Buddhanusorn was founded in 1983 as a temple for the dedication of the Buddha. The main objectives behind the founding of the temple community are propagating the Buddha’s teachings and practice, teaching and promoting Thai art, language, and culture to all who are interested, and serving as a pillar of the Thai community. The abbot is Pramaha Prasert. The temple has always relied on donations and volunteer work for its support.
Wat Buddhanusorn has been visited and blessed by several dignitaries, including Her Majesty Queen Sirikit of Thailand in 1993, who dedicated a stone and planted a tree, making it the only temple outside Thailand where she has given such a blessing. Other visitors and supporters have included His Holiness Somdech Phramaha Thiracarya in 1993, Her Royal Highness Princess Soamsawali, Her Royal Highness Princess Bajakitiyabha, and His Holiness Somdech Phramaha Rajmangalacarya, who in 1997 presided over a gathering of over 150 Thai monks for the demarcation of the temple.
The monks and supporters of Wat Buddhanusorn work with the Tri-Cities Ministerial Association, donate food and supplies to local and national charities and homeless shelters, provide scholarships and meal funds for students in Thai villages, and support traditional Thai medical pharmacies, the Chai Pattana Foundation, and the National Council of Welfare of Thailand. The abbot, Pramaha Prasert, volunteers to teach Buddhism to prison inmates. Many projects focus on building and strengthening the Buddhist community in Fremont, including holding an open house and conducting meditation and dhamma classes, and all are welcome to attend without discrimination.
