Ballet Folklórico México Danza

Ballet Folklórico México Danza is a non-profit dance company where students take part in folkloric dance. The program is influenced by the work of Amalia Hernandez, known as the “Queen of Mexican Folklore.” The program has grown to include individuals of all ages and nationalities from diverse Bay Area communities.

• Schedule: Class options Monday–Saturday during afternoon and evening hours

Ballet Folklórico México Danza’s non-profit dance company is dedicated to presenting the cultural heritage of Mexico through folkloric dance and strives to help students of all ages develop as artists in a unique, disciplined and cultural environment. The group’s original purpose was to serve as an after-school program to keep children from drug use and gang activities, and it is described as a safe space for children to develop a love of dance and learn about their heritage. The passion and energy of the dancers, colorful costumes, and intricate dance style have helped the group gain a loyal following.

Ballet Folklórico México Danza was founded by Renê González, with collaboration from Martín Romero of Mexico City. Renê González and Martín Romero each have over 30 years of dance experience at national and international levels. Ballet Folklórico México Danza has been a member of the Bay Area community since 1991. In 1995, Ballet Folklórico México Danza received a Presidential Proclamation from President William J. Clinton.

One former participant, Jessica Ramos, shared that she danced for the company as a teenager and remembered Renê and Martín as great teachers who left strong memories. Another student, Steven Ekejiuba, described Martín’s eye for detail in dance instruction and noted that this teaching helped him notice and improve minor flaws in his dance style.
