About
CLASS Academics offers 1:1 academic support and interventions in reading, math, writing, homework help, penmanship, and world languages including Spanish and Korean. The program provides reading support and intervention grounded in the Science of Reading, including phonics, fluency, comprehension, foundational literacy skills, and support for students with dyslexia or those significantly behind in reading, whether formally diagnosed or not. Students can also receive support in all core subjects across grade levels preK–12th grade (and beyond), along with executive functioning support such as organization skills, time management, planning, study skills, and self-monitoring strategies.
• Ages: 4–18 years old
• Schedule: Typically operates Monday–Thursday from 3–7 PM during after-school hours
CLASS Academics was established in July 2012 by founder and reading specialist Colleen Markowitz, M. Ed, and is a woman-owned small business. The leadership team includes Colleen Markowitz, M. Ed (Founder & Reading Specialist); Carina Assayed, M.A. (Director & Co-owner); Ms. Barbara Kennison, M. Ed (Credentialed Special Education Instructor); Ms. Robin Choi (Credentialed Secondary ELA Instructor); Ms. Bentley, M.A. (Credentialed Primary Teacher); Ms. Grace (Credentialed Secondary ELA Instructor); Ms. Heather Silva (Curriculum Specialist, virtual only); and Ms. Arlene Valencia, M. Ed (Credentialed Special Education Instructor, virtual only). Credentialed teachers provide in-person and virtual 1:1 academic support, and staff members are either credentialed teachers, working toward a teaching credential, or in related fields such as Educational Psychology, Speech & Language Therapy, and Occupational Therapy.
According to the program’s mission statement, CLASS Academics tailors each lesson to the needs and learning styles of each student using evidence-based instruction and innovative methods, with a focus on the whole child and developmentally appropriate, research-based, multi-sensory practices. Staff members are carefully selected, must complete intensive training, are fingerprinted through the Department of Justice, and are trained and certified in CPR. The program notes a specialization in supporting learners with ADHD and executive functioning challenges, and offers a free consultation call after families fill out a form, with text-only contact and phone calls by appointment, as well as a newsletter for registration updates and important happenings.
Parent testimonials describe staff as supportive, knowledgeable, and invested in student goals, and mention smooth communication and well-organized programming. Parents report long-term Spanish language tutoring for children in dual language programs, describe tutors as accommodating with changing sports and extracurricular schedules, and note support for children with dyslexia or other learning differences. Other parents state that their children have attended for almost a year, receive individual attention from tutors, and have made progress in reading and writing, and they recommend the business for children struggling with reading, writing, or confidence in their learning abilities.
