About
Camp Surfbird includes chaperoned festival activities, experiences just for campers, and two full-day festival field trips, one pelagic and one land trip. Campers spend time expanding birding skills, learning about the natural history of coastal California, and taking part in beach activities on the evening of March 1. The program also includes chances for meeting other young people with similar interests and exploring careers and opportunities in ornithology, research, and conservation while networking with leaders in the field.
• Ages: 13–17 years old
• Schedule: Feb 27–March 1, 2026; lodging for 2 nights
• Price: Camp cost is $750 per child; a $150 deposit (non-refundable) is due at the time of registration.
Camp Surfbird includes lodging for 2 nights, daily transportation for festival activities, and meals for campers, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Twin-sized sheets, bedding, and towels are not included. Campers traveling by air or train must be able to travel independently, but will be picked up by Camp Surfbird staff in San Diego and transported to the camp. Working together, San Diego Bird Alliance and the American Birding Association have planned this weekend for young birders to gather and explore the region with like-minded peers. San Diego Bird Alliance has earned a Candid Platinum Seal of Transparency. Scholarships are available. The mission of the organizing group is: “Together we defend our region's birds, unique biodiversity, and threatened habitats through advocacy, education, and restoration.”
