About
Gaya’s Schoolhouse offers music, dance, art, and soccer classes, along with drawing, painting, sculpting, and art projects using recycled materials. Children take part in songs, nursery rhymes, poems, puppet shows, short plays, and a graduation ceremony and performance. The program also includes weekly dance courses taught by Plaza Production One Dance Studio, a weekly yoga class, soccer practice, walking field trips around the neighborhood, and dance breaks using Mother Goose Time’s Dance ‘n Beats movement program.
• Ages: 0–11 years old
• Schedule: Open Monday–Friday from 7:30am–5:30pm, with optional extended hours from 6:30am–6:30pm, all year round except for most major holidays
Since 1997, Gaya’s Schoolhouse has dedicated itself to providing quality early childhood education. The program’s mission is to work with children to establish and develop play, social, and communication skills, to build lifelong learning skills, and to create the confidence children need to succeed at home, school, and in everyday life. Gaya’s Schoolhouse is licensed by the State of California to operate as a child care educational center, with license number 198003698.
Gaya’s Schoolhouse offers a multilingual program with second language options in Spanish, Bulgarian, and Armenian, and teaches reading and writing. Academics are based on the Mother Goose Time research-based preschool curriculum covering eight domains, and the program uses Handwriting Without Tears workbooks. The program offers tailored Infant + Toddler, Preschool, Kindergarten, and After-school programs, along with potty training, social interaction development, speech delay resolution, and sign language. A typical day includes structured educational activities, indoor and outdoor playtime, a nutritious lunch and afternoon snack, and a 2-hour mid-day nap. Children do not watch television or play with computers or devices.
The program serves freshly cooked organic meals and serves organic food. Children do not wear shoes indoors, all staff wear separate indoor and outdoor shoes, and visitors are asked to remove their shoes at the door. Any child that displays symptoms of sickness is immediately sent home.
Gaya leads the program with her staff, and she plays the accordion. Gaya’s family, including her husband and her two daughters Gohar and Aida, help out every year with events and are described as a support system. One parent notes that their son participates in music, zumba, and soccer and brings home art every day, and that he has been attending since 7 months old and is now almost 3. Another parent describes Gaya’s Schoolhouse as a combination of a learning environment in a homey setting, and mentions that Gaya’s family is very invested in the Schoolhouse and helps with events each year. A former student describes Gaya’s Schoolhouse as a second family and remembers fun memories there. Another parent shares that their daughter, who attended in her formative years, learned that science is fascinating, that working together as a team makes you happy, that you should treat others with respect, and that you can succeed when you put your heart into what you do, and says that Gaya knows how to approach a child and make them see the world in a new and beautiful way.
