• Ages: 3–18 years old
• Schedule: Class options Monday–Saturday during the school year, with summer programs offered in July and August
California DanceArts Youth Programs was established in 1987. The program is led by Director and Artistic Director Aerin Holt, with quoted input from Bill Waldinger of Joffrey Ballet School. Its mission states that California DanceArts seeks to make a positive contribution in the lives of its students by providing progressive dance education of the highest caliber, used to develop, nurture, encourage and motivate students in the pursuit of their artistic goals, aspirations and dreams.
California DanceArts includes the AMERICAN BALLET THEATRE National Training Curriculum, a 9-level program based on ABT’s National Curriculum and incorporating elements of the French school, Cecchetti Italian School, and Russian Vaganova training methods. The program offers a progressive graduated structure that addresses the whole dancer, including basic health and development, with student assessments, syllabus evaluations, periodic examinations, and graduation awards that determine placement into the next level. Instruction includes French ballet terminology and dance history, and formal evaluations and preparation for pointe work, with children not placed on pointe until specific physical qualifications are met.
Classes and coaching have very limited enrollment, with limits on class size for individual attention and tailored coaching and classes for dancer development. Customized dance coaching is available to meet unique goals, including Private 1:1 Coaching Sessions. Cross training and injury prevention use biomechanics, kinesiology, and training for injury prevention, and cross training is conducted by an instructor certified in MPT-Placement Technique, Posture Alignment from Egoscue Motion Therapy, and Progressing Ballet Technique.
The Dance Essentials program is offered on a private basis to all types of performers. California Contemporary Ballet is the resident company at California DanceArts and features a blend of classical, contemporary, and theatrical dance works with athletic ballet and contemporary dancers, modern dancers, gymnasts, and aerialists. California Contemporary Ballet seeks to increase dance awareness and endow artists with opportunities to engage audiences in the creativity, imagination and joy of dance, and continues to establish a youth division within its organization to encourage young dancers as they pursue a career in dance.
One testimonial states that “They train each student with the belief that they can and will become accomplished. It’s that kind of reinforcement that gives the students self-confidence and pride.”
