The Bishop’s School was founded in 1909 and is an independent college-preparatory day school that serves 800 students in grades six through twelve during the school year. Bishop’s Summer Session states that it provides classes for students in pre-grades 4–12 in a safe and caring environment, with courses for credit, preparation, review and enrichment through project- and inquiry-based activities and STEM/STEAM options taught by experts in their fields. The program notes that elementary and middle school students can enroll in a maximum of four classes or combine classes with the summer athletics program to build a full day, and that Upper School classes for rising grades 9–12 include options for credit and enrichment, along with Academic Explorations for rising grades 6–8, Academic Adventures for rising grades 4–5, and Athletic Camps. The Bishop’s School reports a 9:1 student-teacher ratio, more than 150 upper school course offerings, more than 90 student clubs, and that 85% of students play at least one sport each year, with 120 CIF titles, the fifth highest among all San Diego schools. The school states that 85% of its faculty hold an advanced degree, that it is affiliated with the Episcopal Church, and that it is an inclusive community committed to diversity, equity, inclusion and justice, with 11 affinity spaces for students seeking shared-identity belonging and a Center for Creative Sciences that supports creative, innovative and collaborative work.
