La Jolla Playhouse offers these Summer Youth Programs through its Conservatory Program, Level Up Theatre Camp, and Tech Theatre Training Program. The Conservatory offers students in grades 8–9 and 10–12 an acting intensive experience to build theatre performance skills. Students attend master classes with Playhouse artists, engage with presentations by La Jolla Playhouse staff, learn about the audition process, go behind the scenes of creating theatre, and see a live performance. Students have an opportunity to see behind the scenes of La Jolla Playhouse and attend a performance, including viewing a performance of THE MONSTERS on Thursday, June 25 at 7:30 pm and a performance of THE FAMILY ALBUM on Wednesday, July 22 at 7:30 pm. Students demonstrate an informal sharing of learning on Thursday, July 2 at 6:00 pm and share their learning and experience at an open sharing for families on Thursday, July 23 at 6:00 pm. A limited number of partial and full scholarships are available for accepted Conservatory students.
Program 1 runs June 22–July 2, 2025, as a 9-day program from 9:30 am–4:30 pm, Monday–Friday, and Program 2 runs July 8–24, 2025, as a 15-day program from 9:30 am–4:30 pm, Monday–Friday. In-person auditions for both Conservatory Programs are held in a time slot between 10:00 am–4:00 pm, and an orientation is scheduled for June 20, 2026, at 11:00 am. La Jolla Playhouse is a Tony Award-winning organization, led by Artistic Director Christopher Ashley, with Jessica Stone named as the new Artistic Director of La Jolla Playhouse.
La Jolla Playhouse is a recipient of funding from The San Diego Foundation and the San Diego Unified School District to bring summer theatre camps to San Diego Unified School District students in their school communities during the summer. Created in 2021 by the San Diego Unified School District and The San Diego Foundation, Level Up San Diego featured in-person classroom instruction in the mornings at neighborhood schools with San Diego Unified teachers and summer activities offered by dozens of nonprofits in communities across the city. To be eligible for #LevelUpSD, students must be enrolled in San Diego Unified for the previous school year, and there is no cost to families for the classroom instruction or the activities for Level Up San Diego, based on the commitment by the San Diego Unified Board of Education. Since the summer of 2015, the Playhouse has partnered with Juvenile Court and Community Schools, a division of the San Diego County Office of Education, to offer a week-long Tech Theatre Training class introducing young people to technical theatre. The Tech Theatre Training program reaches a wide range of youth, including those who are incarcerated, transient, or part of the public school system, and, by providing hands-on experience and creative engagement, helps participants build confidence, teamwork skills, and a deeper appreciation for the arts.
