Summer Youth Programs offers theatre training that includes acting, voice, improv, movement, voice and speech, and improvisation. The program also includes technical theatre activities such as Costumes, Lighting, Props, and Scenic Building and Painting. Students attend master classes with La Jolla Playhouse artists, engage with presentations by La Jolla Playhouse staff, learn about the audition process, go behind the scenes of creating theatre, see a live performance, and receive one-on-one mentoring.

• Ages: 13–18 years old
• Schedule: Junior Conservatory is a 9-day program and Conservatory is a 15-day program, with an additional week-long Tech Theatre Training class
• Price: Junior Conservatory cost: $500. Conservatory cost: $850.

Since the summer of 2015, the Playhouse has partnered with Juvenile Court and Community Schools to offer a week-long Tech Theatre Training class introducing young people to technical theatre, covering Costumes, Lighting, Props, and Scenic Building and Painting. Tech Theatre Training is offered in partnership with the San Diego County Office of Education Juvenile Court and Community Schools and reaches youth who are incarcerated, transient, or part of the public school system. The program also partners with San Diego Unified School District to offer extended learning opportunities in musical theatre for elementary school students enrolled previously in Prime Time.

Students in the conservatory programs have an opportunity to see behind the scenes of La Jolla Playhouse and attend a performance. They will have an opportunity to view a performance of THE MONSTERS on Thursday, June 25th at 7:30 pm and a performance of THE FAMILY ALBUM on Wednesday, July 22 at 7:30 pm. Students will demonstrate an informal sharing of learning on Thursday, July 2 at 6:00 pm and will demonstrate learning and experience at an open sharing for families on Thursday, July 23th at 6:00 pm. The production THE MONSTERS has been described as “The Monsters hits hard and hugs harder,” by the San Francisco Chronicle.

Summer Youth Programs take place on the La Jolla Playhouse campus, led by the Tony Award-winning La Jolla Playhouse, whose leadership team includes Christopher Ashley, Artistic Director, and Jessica Stone, Artistic Director of La Jolla Playhouse.
