About

Empowering Readers Orange County (EROC) is the flagship program of Parentis Foundation and offers one-on-one reading tutoring and one-on-one literacy support for children. The program uses carefully structured 30-minute tutoring sessions that include reading intervention programs. These sessions deliver consistent, research-based literacy support and provide intensive, one-on-one literacy support during the early years for 1st–5th grade students in high-need communities where a significant portion of children are reading below grade level.

• Ages: 6–11 years old
• Schedule: 30-minute tutoring sessions

The program is grounded in scientific research about how children learn to read and uses methodologies from the Science of Reading. It tracks student progress through validated DIBELS assessments. Volunteer tutors are age 50 and older, receive comprehensive training, and commit to twice-weekly sessions. The mission of Empowering Readers Orange County (EROC) is to support academic success and social development in children by leveraging the talent and wisdom of older adults through one-on-one reading tutoring and mentoring. The program’s core values are Responsibility, Knowledge, Respect, and Care. The leadership team includes Janice Frechette-Artinger, Executive Director, and Elizah Siegel, Director of Program Operations. Program partners across Orange County, and schools or after school programs can bring reading intervention programs to their sites. One volunteer tutor shared, “Thanks to all of you for the wonderful service you provide, not only to the kids, but also to us seniors who are receiving the beautiful gift of being useful and productive and engaged during our ‘sunset years’. You cannot imagine how much happier I am now than I was before I found out about tutoring!”
