About

Areteem Institute Camps, Courses, and Zoom International Math League (ZIML) includes academic and enrichment activities such as the ZIML Math Competition, Study Hall, and Weekend Activities. The program also includes a trip to Six Flags in Washington as one of its listed activities.

• Ages: 8–18 years old
• Schedule: Monday–Friday, 9:30am–6pm PST

Zoom International Math League started in 2008 as the Southern California Mathematical Olympiad, and the first ZIML Onsite Math Competition was held in 2008. The program offers year-round online programs on the ZIML website and invites students to join the ZIML Community for daily practice, monthly contests, and math practice resources. ZIML includes free daily math problems called Daily Magic Spells, monthly contests, and free practice resources for math contests, and its problems cover many types of AMC math problems and offer similar math challenges. ZIML competition levels correspond to AMC 8, 10, 12, AIME, and USAMO levels, and students are encouraged to use ZIML problems as AMC practice problems. The ZIML Programs, including Monthly Contests, Weekly Brain Potions, and Daily Magic Spells, are described as helping students keep track of their learning progress throughout the year. The electronic scoreboard used in the final process is based on a blackboard scoreboard originally completed by hand by the referee staff.

Areteem programs, including online and onsite courses, summer and winter intensive training camps, and workshops, are accredited by WASC, and Areteem AP courses are officially approved by the College Board as equivalent to regular high school AP courses. The programs are accredited by ACS WASC. Areteem is a long-term partner with the LA County Office of Education, which is the organizer of the LA Math Field Day and the STEM Festival. Additional offerings mentioned with the program include Self-Paced Video Classes, Math Textbooks, the Math Zoom Club, and Intelligence Planet STEAM Programs in the Intelligence Planet.

The leadership of the program includes Dr. Kevin Wang. Dr. Kevin Wang is a former China Team member for the International Math Olympiad (IMO), was the top scorer in China in the American Math Competition (AMC) and American Invitational Math Examination (AIME), and is a winner of multiple national and international contests in math and science in China. He holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the Pennsylvania State University and has worked as a faculty member in Mathematics at UC Irvine and UCLA.

Parent and student comments about the camp include: “My camp experience was awesome, it exceeded my expectations” from Youedon Tenzin of Yale University. Another comment from Tommy Jiang of Yale University states that the classes taught a lot, the activities and field trips were fun, and overall the camp was “awesome.” Sophia Wang of Yale University shared that at first she was scared she would not like it or would get homesick, but that she soon grew to like it and that it was fun to meet people from all over the country.
