About
Able ARTS Work Programs centers its work on creative arts experiences and exhibitions that include artists of all abilities. The programs connect resident artists with community artists through activities such as the Weekend Warrior Residency and the annual juried CORE exhibition, which began in 2005. ArtBeat Radio podcasts are also produced as part of Able ARTS Work Programs and are available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Google Podcasts.
The primary mission of Able ARTS Work is to provide lifelong educational, vocational, and therapeutic services through the creative arts for people of all abilities and all ages in an environment of warmth, encouragement, and inclusion. The organization was established in 1982 as a non-profit organization. Its core values are Partnership, Love, Creativity, Opportunity, Integrity, Progressive, Stewardship, and Ability, and its motto is “Love Before Learning. Learn for Life.” The programs include ADA components to create a fully accessible and inclusive showcase of the arts and are inclusive of artists of all abilities. Able ARTS Work states a belief that all people, regardless of functional capability, have a right and responsibility to contribute to the well being of their community and have a vocation of their choosing, and that people should have access to an informed and supportive community which must play a vital role in removing the barriers to full involvement.
Able ARTS Work Programs are involved in an art community that celebrates creatives across the nation and the globe. The CORE exhibition includes artists of all abilities and exhibitions at venues across the Los Angeles area, and participating community artists from the LA art scene have been invited to create a collaborative body of work with resident artists. The Weekend Warrior Residency has been hosted by Able ARTS Work at Crafted at the Port of Los Angeles, pairing an Able ARTS Work resident artist with a community artist to work side by side. CORE 2021 is described as aiming to unify the larger LA art scene with a narrative on the power of community and the need for continued collaboration among greater society.
Members of the leadership and coordination team include Shir Dyer as Programs Administrator and Health & Wellness Clinic Coordinator, Heidi Tulcan as Mobile Arts Program Coordinator, Kristy Glass as Director of Community Advancement, James Brooks as Accessible Arts Workshops Coordinator, and Jennifer Morris as Exhibits Coordinator. One testimonial about Able ARTS Work describes it as “LOVE COMMUNITY STRENGTH BEAUTIFUL ENLGHTENING ENCHANTING FAMILIA I LIKE IT A LOT HOPE CREATIVITY TOGETHER.”
