About
Quest Therapeutic Camps of Southern California offers sports and traditional camp activities within an evidence-based therapeutic program. The program combines these camp activities with experiential learning that includes aspects of cognitive behavioral therapy, with clear, consistent feedback to campers every hour and small camper-to-staff ratios.
• Ages: 6–18 years old
Quest Therapeutic Camps of Southern California provides summer day camp services specifically designed to build skills and confidence in areas related to social and emotional development, including communication, social skills, emotion regulation, prosocial behaviors, and developing a growth mindset for children and teens ages 6–18 with mild to moderate social, emotional and/or behavioral difficulties. The program welcomes kids with ADHD, high-functioning autism (formerly Asperger’s Disorder), social anxiety, learning disabilities, depression, and more, as well as children without diagnoses, and notes that children with severe aggressiveness, serious psychological problems, behavioral disorders, or severe family problems are not appropriate for the program. The program emphasizes sports and social skills that are often essential for children with ADHD and includes connected home behavior support and interventions, individualized goals for all campers, and a structured, individualized environment designed to develop important life skills and behavior.
Services are provided by skilled professionals with years of training, including experts in mental health and occupational therapy who provide an accepting and caring environment. The Director, Dr. Jodie Knott, Ph.D., BCBA, is a licensed clinical psychologist and behavior analyst who specializes in psychological assessments for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), learning disabilities, mood disorders, as well as child and family therapy, and has directed Quest since 2009. Quest is accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA).
Quest has been found across 4 studies to help children with mild to moderate social, emotional, and behavioral difficulties, and a 2-year study of Quest Therapeutic Camps of Southern California researching 47 campers (2015, Byron K. Smith, M.S.) demonstrated significant positive gains. The program has been found to reduce problems at camp, home, school, and in everyday life, reduce aggression and impulsivity, and improve social cognition, social awareness, social communication, social problems, and behavioral concerns.
Parent feedback includes comments such as a “Happy Camper Mom” reporting that her son loved the camp, that his improved skills are enduring, that the back-to-school transition was far less stressful, that he uses the word “unlucky” when things do not go his way, that he is quicker to follow directions, and that he rated Quest Camp a 10 out of 10. A “Happy Camper Dad” noted that the teamwork of the staff was a strength of Quest, that the staff worked great together, and that it was most helpful to his son that staff pushed him to do things he did not feel he could do.
