Bald Eagle Sports Camps and Basketball Club describes its system as a premier non-traditional sports and leadership development system for K–12th graders, with a full-scale 5-star summer camp program that includes three different summer camps and one Coach In Training volunteer program at one location. The summer Multi-Sports Camp is described as a non-traditional camp with unique games mixed with traditional favorites in a highly active atmosphere of inclusion, and the Sports Leadership Camp includes two field trips each week plus a “design your own activity plan” for on-campus days. The Basketball Club offers programs from beginner clinics and leagues to elite AAU travel teams, and the PRO Coach Growth League holds practices and games on the same day once per week. Extended Care is available Monday–Friday from 7:30am–6pm for summer camps, and snacks are included at summer camp.
The mission of Bald Eagle Sports Camps is to provide youth with Development Zones, described as safe spaces that teach leadership skills through sports activities, using a Development Zones system of activities and experiences for K–12th grade. The program states that its games and activities are designed to make every camper feel included, encouraged, and inspired, with an intentional environment for children to develop as leaders while having a safe and fun place to play. It uses a Mastery Approach to Learning, where success is described as being achieved through maximum effort, an attitude of learning, and freedom from the fear of mistakes, and it states that the umbrella fitness goal of every camp, clinic, or training is to have fun and find success in lifetime activities.
Bald Eagle Sports Camps is the first ever Positive Coaching Alliance Approved Camp, and every coach and staff member is trained in Positive Coaching Alliance methods. The entire staff is certified as Positive Coaching Alliance Double Goal Coaches. Bald Eagle is described as a premier leadership development program in the Bay Area through its Coach In Training Program.
Bob and Glenda McFarlane are the founders of Bald Eagle Sports Camps, and Bob McFarlane (Coach Bob) is identified as a previously Certified Positive Coaching Alliance Trainer and PCA Development Zone Leadership Fellow. Coach Bob has over 40 years of coaching experience at the youth, high school, and college levels, including 3 years as an assistant for the Chico State Men’s Basketball program. He has been a high school PE and Special Education teacher for 23 years and is in his 18th year at Los Altos High School. Coach Bob received his BA in Kinesiology and Teaching Credential in 1994 from Chico State University and obtained a second credential and a Master’s Degree in Special Education from Santa Clara University in 2004. With over 25 years of experience working with youth, he is described as an anchor in the local basketball and education community.
The program notes that it serves the Peninsula and South Bay Area in California. Bob is the founding faculty advisor for two student clubs at Los Altos High School: the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and the student spirit BLUE CREW.
Parent testimonials describe the program’s coaching and atmosphere. One parent, Leah Klinger, states, “Excellent coaching and positive atmosphere! Bald Eagle AAU creates a passion for the game of basketball and instills a drive in the kids to improve each time they are on the court.” Another parent, Dj Zhao, shares, “The coaches are amazing! My son already attended two camps and made so much progress. We are definitely signing up for future camps!”
