Champions
Champions at Covington Elementary, 201 Covington Rd., Los Altos, CA 94024
About
Champions offers activities in STEM, art, and group games. The program includes year-round learning environments that spark wonder in children. Emotional wellness is an essential part of the curriculum and approach to education, with daily lessons in community building and character development and a focus on fostering kindness, empathy, and fairness.
• Schedule: Before- and after-school care during the school year and during summer, winter, or spring breaks
Teachers and staff undergo extensive training on health and safety practices, including pandemic-response protocols, and are trained in first aid and CPR. Teachers and staff members are trained in child development, early childhood education, or a related field, and criminal background checks are conducted on staff. Champions states that it is a safe, healthy place for children to thrive and follows local health department guidelines and the guidance of the schools they operate in. Champions has earned Corporate Accreditation from Cognia.
The program maintains a secure, nurturing, and accessible environment where only authorized staff and families may enter sites. All sites include smoke detectors and fire extinguishers, are cleaned daily with safe, non-toxic cleaning products, and high-touch items and surfaces are sanitized throughout the day, with cleaning supplies locked safely out of children’s reach. Staff and students practice frequent hand washing, and there is a wellness screening located near the Family Communication Area. If a child becomes ill while in care, families are notified and appropriate measures are taken, and information is provided to families about instances of contagious diseases affecting children who may have had direct exposure at the program.
Most sites offer breakfast, lunch, and snacks, with meal service varying from site to site. At sites that provide meal service, menus satisfy applicable federal and state nutrition guidelines and include a variety of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and lean protein, including calcium-rich foods. Sites may restrict which food items are served and brought into the site to accommodate food allergies.
All children must be signed in and out on a paper-based roster and/or computer system. Only pre-approved people with photo identification may pick up a child, and written authorization must be on file before a child is released to anyone. Outdoor play is supervised and conducted only on safe, secure outdoor play spaces available at the school or program location. Staff are regularly trained on safety measures related to field trips or off-site activities, and families must provide permission before a child participates in a field trip or off-site activity.
Champions has strict policies for administering medication, and a doctor’s note is required for any medication for any child under the age of 2. Each site has an emergency evacuation plan that is tested frequently, and an emergency plan and list of procedures are posted in each classroom. The National Support Center has a crisis team that supports each center during and after emergencies, and if a center must temporarily close due to an emergency, families and staff are updated on when the center can re-open.
Current families can contact Champions Family Support at 1-800-246-2154. Parents planning to enroll can find a Champions location near them via the website. Educators and administrators can contact Champions about bringing Champions to their school, and job seekers can learn more about careers at Champions and current job openings via the website. An Ethics Support Line is available at 1-844-889-4478 or online at KinderCare.EthicsPoint.com.
