Bald Eagle Sports Camps is described as a premier non-traditional sports and leadership development system for K–12th graders, with over 20 years of concept development and fine-tuning in its K–12th grade system of activities and experiences. The mission of Bald Eagle Sports Camps is to provide youth with Development Zones, which are safe spaces that teach leadership skills through sports activities, using a Development Zone System of activities to create what the program calls the perfect culture. Programs, games, and activities are described as being designed to make every camper feel included, encouraged, and inspired to be their best, and are delivered to facilitate campers tangibly experiencing being a leader.
The program’s umbrella fitness goal for every camp, clinic, or training is to have fun and find success in life-time activities, and it teaches the Positive Coaching Alliance message to campers. Bald Eagle Sports Camps teaches what it calls the Mastery Approach to Learning, where success is achieved through maximum effort, an attitude of learning, and freedom from the fear of mistakes. The Summer Sports Leadership Camp includes two field trips each week and a “design your own activity plan” for the days on campus, and is described as “The Older Kids Sports Experience!” and “built for the big kids.”
Bald Eagle Sports Camps is the first ever Positive Coaching Alliance Approved Camp and states that it aims to instill the qualities of a Triple Impact Competitor into each individual. The entire staff is certified as Positive Coaching Alliance Double Goal Coaches, and every coach and staff member has been trained in Positive Coaching Alliance methods of creating an optimal culture for youth. The program describes its overall offering as a “5-STAR” service package and states that its system produces confident, positive, contributing leaders of the future and helps youth redefine what it means to be a winner.
Bob and Glenda McFarlane are the founders of Bald Eagle Sports Camps. “Coach Bob” is a previously Certified Positive Coaching Alliance Trainer and has been honored as a Positive Coaching Alliance Development Zone Leadership Fellow. Bob received his BA in Kinesiology and Teaching Credential in 1994 from Chico State University, and in 2004 he obtained a second credential and a Master’s Degree in Special Education from Santa Clara University. He has over 40 years of coaching experience at the youth, high school, and college levels, including three years as an assistant for the Chico State Men’s Basketball program, and has held Head Varsity Boys Basketball positions at Los Altos High School and St. Lawrence Academy. Bob has been a high school PE and Special Education teacher for 23 years and is in his 18th year at Los Altos High School, where he is also the founding faculty advisor for two student clubs, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and the student spirit BLUE CREW.
Bald Eagle Sports Camps serves the Peninsula and South Bay Area in California, and Bob is described as an anchor in the local basketball and education community. The program is described as offering summer and vacation camps, with three summer camps at one location: Basketball Camp, Multi-Sports Camp, and Sports Leadership Camp. Parent testimonials include one from Katrina Watters, who said her son loves the camp, praised the staff, and noted positive energy and growth in basketball, and another from Palina Alekseeva, who shared that her son attended camp for six weeks and thanked Bob and the coaches who helped teach, develop, and amuse her son.
