Galactic Sports is a program where children take part in basic sports skills, wellness lessons, and basketball games and drills. The program includes instruction in the importance of healthy habits such as physical activity, healthy eating, sleep, and emotional well-being. All sessions are taught by trained health educators, and Gasol Foundation provides materials to participants, including t-shirts, sports merchandise, and supporting content.
• Schedule: The program takes children through 10 weekly one-hour trainings/lessons in a sport.
• Price: All of these sessions are free to participants.
Galactic Sports is a program of the Gasol Foundation, which was founded in 2013. All programs utilize the Healthy Galaxy Model, which includes Physical Activity Planet, Healthy Eating Planet, Sleep Planet, and Emotional Well-being Planet. Gasol Foundation founders are Pau and Marc Gasol, and Pau Gasol serves as Board President and Marc Gasol serves as Board Vice President. Nehal Raj, Co-Managing Partner of TPG Capital and Co-Managing Partner of TPG Tech Adjacencies (TTAD), serves on the Gasol Foundation USA Board of Directors. Michele Chan Soon-Shiong is President of The Chan Soon-Shiong Family Foundation, and Dr. Martha Molina Bernadett is President and CEO of The Molina Foundation. The Gasol Foundation is on a mission to reduce childhood obesity through research, the development and implementation of health promotion programs, and increased public awareness.
Gasol Foundation USA was awarded the UCLA Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) CERP Community Grant of $10,000. Gasol Foundation USA partnered with YMCA Los Angeles for an event that Gasol Foundation USA described as “a complete success,” stating that “the children had a blast.” Gasol Foundation USA is a partner in the Voices for Healthy Kids Coalition and has supported California State Senator Nancy Skinner’s SB 348, Healthy Meals for Kids, and California State Senator Josh Newman’s SB 291, Daily Recess for All. Gasol Foundation USA is looking for after school program sites in Los Angeles County that want to support the health and wellness of the children and families they serve. Pau Gasol stated that he was very excited that three objects with sentimental value could contribute to raising funds for the mission of the Gasol Foundation and commented on the support given to families in vulnerable situations that participate in programs promoting healthy habits.
