Wilshire Boulevard Temple Camps has 75 years of history and began in 1952 when Rabbi Alfred Wolf of Wilshire Boulevard Temple envisioned the camp. The program states that Jewish community is at the core of its values and that Jewish values are a part of every day, and that camp is where kids live, learn, and play with purpose, building character and connections that last a lifetime. Meals are served kosher style, with no pork or shellfish and no mixing of milk and meat, and the Academy provides balanced options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with campers able to have seconds and thirds and with allergies and dietary restrictions accommodated. The camp lists expert staff, caring counselors, and seasoned pros, and the leadership team includes Jen Shankman (Director), Erica Feinman (Senior Associate Director), and Adrian Taha-Green (Assistant Director).
Wilshire Boulevard Temple Camps is associated with Wilshire Boulevard Temple and notes camp families spanning generations and employees who were campers and counselors who became friends. The program is open to all Jewish backgrounds, from just-curious to deeply connected, and describes Jewish life as joyful, personal, and alive, with Shabbat as a weekly highlight that includes singing, reflection, and Israeli dancing under the stars. Rising 12th graders can become CITs, and specialty programs include Surf Camp and Israel trips, along with electives and specialty tracks such as Yahm Surf and Kef B’Yahm. Since the fires in 2018, camp has been held at different locations while maintaining the camp experience, and living away from home is described as strengthening responsibility and resilience.
The camp displays logos indicating American Camp Association accreditation, Keshet LGBTQ Safe Zone designation, and connections with the Foundation for Jewish Camp (FJC), JCAMP180, and jewishfederationlosangeles. Camp buses depart from Wilshire Boulevard Temple in Los Angeles with drop-off directly on site at the Academy.
