• Schedule: Meets during after-school hours from 3pm–6pm
TEAM PRIME TIME first opened its doors on February 6, 2001, and in the Fall of 2004 created its full-inclusion sports program, the Prime Time Games. The 2006–07 academic year saw the opening of two new sites, and TPT opened its 4th location in the Fall of 2008. By the end of the 2008–09 academic year, TPT was serving over 600 students per day and over 1,500 students per year, and the 2012–13 school year saw TPT open its 5th after school program location. In 2018, TPT had 8 After School Programs with the addition of Studio School, City School and CLIC.
TEAM PRIME TIME (TPT) was created in response to the critical need for after-school programming for at-risk children from low-income areas of Los Angeles. TPT’s primary goal for its academics program is increasing high school graduation rates for underserved youth, and these goals work together to help TPT achieve one of its primary organization goals: improving high school graduation rates for disadvantaged youth. TPT’s approach is based on employing quality, experienced staff in a low, 10:1 staffing ratio in order to implement a comprehensive curriculum.
The program’s leadership team includes Executive Director Peter Straus, who has over thirty years of experience teaching and coaching in LAUSD Schools and at his Prime Time Sports Camp, along with Chief Operating Officer Robert Hinds, Senior Operations Director Kent Campfield, Operations Manager David Wright, Office Manager Billy Dunwoody, Program Director Ronnie McClain, Prime Time Games Program Manager Deja Clark, LAUSD Elementary School Program Manager Oscar Pelt, LAUSD Middle School Program Manager Chauntiquia Dillard, and Prime Time Games Regional Director Atonye Nyingifa.
TPT works in partnership with the Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Foundation to promote literacy and reading comprehension, and with Loyola Law School through the Prime Time Trials Mock Trial Partnership. The financial literacy curriculum is taught by Union Bank. TPT, in partnership with the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), opened two new sites, Palms Middle School and Westside Leadership Magnet. TPT was chosen by the LA84 Foundation as a partner in the launching of the LA84 Middle School Sports League Pilot Program, and each LA84 Middle School Sports League season culminates in the PRIME TIME JAMBOREE, a six-site TPT tournament with the winner earning the right to take home the WSA CUP. MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership is featuring the Prime Time Games as part of its partnership with NBA Cares on behalf of My Brother’s Keeper.
The Prime Time Games are described as the centerpiece of TPT’s leadership component and include a High School Division Pilot Program (“Varsity Games”), which is described as the first full inclusion high school sports league of its kind.
